Whitefield is a staple on the summer calendar, the largest outdoor tournament in England on our doorstep so it would be rude not to. This year we entered four teams across the various divisions. Mixed Division 1, Men’s Division 1, Mixed Division 2 and Men’s Division 4. After the standard team tweaks due to drop outs the weekend came, the tents were put up and 24 pizzas were ordered – a sign to start the weekend. Day 1 saw a mixed bag of weather but that didn’t put our teams off their game. ESVC Stormzy (Mixed Division 1) and ESVC Stormers (Mixed Division 2) both went unbeaten in their pool games with ESVC Stormtroopers (Men’s Division 1) and ESVC Too Spicy (Men’s Division 4) dropping just one game each.
Day 2 came, as did the weather and things really started to hotten up. Stormers, matched their name sake, and won all 4 of their Division 2 pool games. Winning three on points difference and securing themselves a place in the final. Stormzy took 2 wins from 4 and narrowly missed out on their Division 1 final due to a draw in another pool game. It was even closer for Too Spicy in their Men’s Division 4 pool, which came down to points scored for a finals place. It was 7 points in it! So close! The Stormtroopers in Division 1 only secured a single win but did claim redemption as they beat Grassy Mille, the team which prevented last years Men’s Division 1 team from reaching the final.
For the remaining Stormers, it was onto the final and once again it came down to points difference. Losing the first set by 3 meant the task was clear, win by or 4 or go home empty handed. A quick water break and they stormed out of the blocks and didn’t look back, winning by a comfortable 7 points and earning themselves the 2024 Mixed Division 2 Cup!
